Who is Lucy Shuker?
Lucy Shuker is a British wheelchair tennisplayer who is
currently the highest ranking woman in the sport in Britain
following a motorbike accident in 2001 that left her paralysed
from the chest down. She is currently ranked 7th in the world
rankings for singles and 6th in the world for doubles. She has
beaten 3 of the women ranked above her in the top 10 in singles
and is hoping to maintain and increase her ranking reading for a
seeding position (top 8) for the Paralymics in London, in
September 2012. She
was also the recipient of the 2005 Wheel Power Sports Award for
the category "Individual Female
Achievement Award" beating Dame
Tani Grey Thompson in the short list. The 2006 Players player of
the Year award (voted for by the players on the world wheelchair
tennis tour). Some of her best tournament results include reaching the final at the inaugral
Womens Doubles event at Wimbledon in 2010, winner of the 2010 Belgian Open in singles and doubles,
runner up in the British Open doubles event 2010, the Salzburg Open 2010 and the US pen (St Louis) 2010,
winner of the 2010 Hilton Head US tournament in singles and doubles, winner of the 2010 Canadian
International Singles and doubles, runner up in the Camozzi Doubles Masters 2010 and beating
the World No 4 at the Singles Masters 2010.
From Fleet in Hampshire, Shuker trains in Taunton, Somerset with her coach Natalie Ayton, her strength and conditioning coach James Quirk and massage/sports injury therapist Rob Date. Shuker competed in her first Paralympic Games in Beijing 2008 in both singles and doubles gaining valuable experience but is hoping to win a medal in the London 2012 Paralympics.
